DAY TEN ~ Santa Cruize Island, South Plaza Island

As we departed the Darwin Research Station, we walked through the town adjacent to it. There were some beautiful orchid like flowers along the way, as well as vibrant bougainvillea.

What can I say, I have a hard time passing up beautiful flowers when I see them.

The bougainvillea seems to especially thrive very well here.

I did not know that our friend Norman Silberstein had his own hotel here in the Galápagos Islands.

And quite a handsome building it was. I should have stepped inside and checked out the rack rate.

Pete admired Jorge's hat, so we stopped in at this little shop and he bought on for himself.

His present hat has certainly seen better days. Note the monument to Lonesome George. He's quite the hero here.

This is the bus we took to our next destination. Sometimes you have to wait quite a while for a tortoise to cross the road. We'll be able to go around this one when the other bus passes us by. But if it was in the middle of the road, it would be a different story.

At Plaza the tortoises were enormous. And their environment was lush and had lots of natural food for them.

At Plaza there was a very nice lunch prepared for us. The morsilla was excellent.
I hope I'm not rushing this too much. We will be flying to California on Monday, the 14th of February and I wouldn't be able to get back to this until after we return on the 7th of March. I'm sort of on a roll, so it would be nice to be able to wrap it up before we leave. In Chapter Nineteen you will see many more giant tortoises in this beautiful habitat, and also one very exotic new sub-species that we discovered on this very trip.
