In the afternoon we arrived at Deception Island, formed by a volcano, the bay is circular, the volcano’s cone, with only a 1 km opening to navigate into the bay.

Here we are coming up to the opening to the left. The dip is called Neptune’s window, something we can hike to once we are inside the bay.

This is the bay opening, seen from inside the bay. The bay view of Neptune’s window.

Lots of leftover artifacts from the old whaler’s station.

Neptune’s window over Ron’s right shoulder.

Trekking up to Neptune’s window, not a very steep climb, but the drop off on the other side was pretty scary and the wind was blowing like hell, feeling like it was going to propel you right over the edge.

I liked this guys name, “Hvalfangerselskabet”, WOW, that’s a mouthful!

Someone stacked some rocks on the corner to keep it from collapsing, I don’t think this would pass California code.

Ron goofing around.

Some people wanted to do an Antarctica plunge so Shane lowered the gangway and joked that they had the defibrillator ready. I think 7 or 8 people did it. Ron and I both did this when we visited previously in 2001 so I felt I didn’t need to do it again.

This is Dennis from the Netherlands, I don’t think his legs were working after the plunge.
That evening we set for home with a 2 day sail through Drake’s passage.

Luckily there are hand railings everywhere.
When we arrived back in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and there was a new dusting of snow on everything and it was colder then when we left.

Once home we started washing clothes, Ron learned you shouldn’t put alpaca wool gloves in the dryer.
The cats were very happy to see us, Rocky is yawning, not hissing at Boris.

Now I have 3 days to put up the Christmas tree!
All in all a really spectacular trip!
