Sunday, December 7th, 2008 - A full day at sea, there were multiple lectures and video presentations to keep us occupied.
Phil our historian / geologist / hiker, gives a lecture.
Monday, December 8th, 2008 - Another full day at sea on our way to South Georgia Island, however, in the afternoon we passed by Shag Rock, a strange outcropping of the top of an extinct volcano.

The seas were pretty rough.

Strange to see something like that sticking up in the middle of open ocean, I’d sure hate to run into that thing in the middle of the night.
It is part of the Scotia arch, formed as South America and Antarctica separated from the large one land mass of Gondwana many millions of years ago.
Our Quark Expedition Team

Tony was actually on our first trip with Quark in 2001. I didn’t remember him until he told one of his really silly jokes, he loves to tell them and when I heard one, I said to myself, “I remember that guy!”

As bartender, Hannah should probably be listed BEFORE the captain in importance, at least as far as I’m concerned. She’s a great person and great bartender!
Shokalskiy Captain and Officers

The first officer looks like Sean Connery.

Max is a very friendly guy and really seems to enjoy working on this ship.
Boatswain & Sailors

Gennady looks a little stern but he’s really a nice guy.
Cooks and Serving staff

Mykola is a really nice guy and very friendly. He says he’s been on the ocean 30 years, he calls himself crazy, “You are only here 2 weeks, then you go home, but I stay here all the time!”

Galina is a very nice person and always smiling, with the rough open seas we’ve been having, she seems to have gravity boots from “Star Trek” as she carries multiple plates back and forth to the kitchen without dropping anything.

And finally ....

...someone we never did get to meet!
