Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 - We arrive in Ushuaia to start our trip, first we overnight in a hotel before heading for the ship.

The sun was out and felt wonderful so we started the trip with a gin and tonic on the deck.

That evening’s dessert.

Ron’s always happy with a dessert in front of him.

This was after dinner, about 10:00 pm, since we’re so far south it gets dark about 11:30pm.

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 - The next morning we booked a morning excursion to the local natural park.

This was our hotel, Los Nires, which is a type of local indigenous tree, we also stayed here the first time we visited Antarctica in 2001.

This is Hennie, from Holland who is also going to Antarctica.

The would stamp your passport with a cool “End of the World” sticker.

Ron loves writing post cards so he bought several to write on the boat.

This plaque shows the borders with Chile.

A guide took us around describing the plants and trees.

The southern most tip of Argentina, this is the end of the Pan American Highway that goes all the way from Alaska, only 17,848 kilometers away or 10,687 miles, to this point. Some call it the “End of the World”, they like to call it the “Beginning of the World”.

This walkway led out to an observation point at the tip of the border with Chile.

Downtown Ushuaia, this the restaurant we ate in the first time we visited, unfortunately I found it AFTER we finished eating in another restaurant.

This is our boat, a Russian ice ship the “Akademik Shokalskiy”, named after a famous Russian scientist.
On the other side of the pier was a ship loading containers, I timed it and it only took 4 minutes from the start of lifting one container, placing it on the ship, repositioning the crane, attaching the next container and then the start of another lifting cycle. I thought that was pretty impressive timing, later I asked one of the crew members and they said the fee to dock alongside the pier is in the thousands of dollars per hour, so they have to minimize time on the pier.

Ushuaia from the boat top observation deck. One of the control stations on the bridge.

After leaving the pier we had a routine life boat drill.

Max, a Russian first mate is our lifeboat captain. He loves to crank up the engines!
